Gifts for art lovers: original pieces they will actually live with
People who love art are hard to buy for. They have opinions, they notice reproductions of famous paintings, and they rarely want more clutter. The trick is to give them something original, in a form that fits their life.
Start with the artwork, not the object
Most gift guides start with the product: a mug, a print, a tote. For an art lover that order is backwards. They care about the image first. So begin by asking which picture you can imagine them looking at every day.
Our studio has ten original artworks, and they fall into a few moods. Koi Pond Glow, Zen Stone Garden and Moonlit Hare are quiet and calm. Whale of the Galaxy and Coral Reef Bloom are deep, saturated blues. Rainy Window Coffee and Boba Buddy are warm and cozy. Sunset Roller Skates and Crystal Burst are loud, bright and happy. Glowing Mushroom Grove sits somewhere between cozy and strange, in the best way.
If you know their home, think about the colours already in it. If you know their wardrobe, think about what they actually wear. Matching the mood matters more than matching the medium.
Then pick how they will live with it
Once you have the artwork, choose the format. Each design is offered on several products, and they suit different people.
For the person with walls to fill, a framed print is the easiest gift to receive: 12×18 inches, in a black or white frame, ready to hang. A gallery-wrapped canvas (12×18 or 16×24 inches) has no frame and no glass, so it reads as a more finished piece of art. A matte poster at 12×18 inches is the lightest commitment and the lowest price for wall art, and it lets them choose their own frame.
For the person who wears their taste, a soft unisex jersey tee or a heavy-blend pullover hoodie carries the artwork on the chest. Tees come in black, natural, navy and white; hoodies in navy, sport grey and black.
For the person who says they do not want anything, go small and useful: an 11 oz glossy ceramic mug, a sturdy canvas tote, or a 3×3 inch kiss-cut vinyl sticker for a laptop or water bottle.
Why original art matters to this crowd
Art lovers can spot a licensed print of a famous painting from across the room, and a lot of gift-shop art is exactly that. Everything in our shop is original artwork owned by OTOWN CUSTOMS. That means the piece you give is not the same poster they have seen in every dorm and dentist office.
It also means we can be honest about what you are buying: these are printed reproductions of our original digital artworks, made to order by our US print partners. They are not signed limited editions, and we will not pretend otherwise.
